Do You Have the Five Key Traits of an Emotionally Intelligent Person?
--
Emotional intelligence, the ability to identify and manage one’s own emotions, as well as the emotions of others, plays an increasingly important role at the highest level of the company. We are naturally drawn to people with emotional intelligence and feel comfortable and at ease around them. Most employees would love to have a boss that understands how they feel and what they’re trying to achieve.
Looking to cultivate this skill but unsure where to start? We’ve got you covered.
The 5 Keys of Emotional Intelligence
- Self-awareness. This encompasses knowing one’s strengths, weaknesses, drives, values, and impact on others. You’re confident in yourself, can realistically assess yourself, and have a thirst for constructive criticism.
- Self-regulation. You’re able to control or redirect disruptive impulses and moods. You’re comfortable with ambiguity and change and possess integrity and trustworthiness.
- Motivation. You relish achievement for its own sake. You have a passion for the work itself and new challenges that come your way. You are optimistic in the face of failure and have unflagging energy to improve.
- Empathy. You understand other people’s emotional makeup and are sensitive to cross-cultural references. You have expertise in attracting and retaining talent as well as the ability to help in others’ development.
- Social skills. You’re good at building rapport with others to encourage them to move in their desired direction. You have expertise in building and leading teams, extensive networking, and can be persuasive. You are also effective in leading change.
If your first thought is, “I don’t have all of these traits, but I’d like to,” never fear, there are ways to cultivate emotional intelligence. Start by learning to identify and understand the emotions you’re feeling. Being able to name the emotions you feel gives you a better chance of understanding them. Once you’re able to do this yourself, it’ll be easier to apply to your colleagues. Don’t forget to take time to practice and ask for feedback from those around you so you can track your progress.
